The constellation depicting the winged white horse that sprang from the neck of Medusa when Perseus beheaded her. The Polynesian forefathers of the Māori called the Great Square of Pegasus “Ka Lupe O Kawelo”, the kite of the great chief Kawelo. This cluster of four stars was one of the important beacons that guided the ancestors of the Māori safely across the Pacific Ocean to their new homeland.
