Why Do I Need A Fitter In Peterborough?

Apr 24, 2025 | Fitting, Carpet Fitting

The perfect cosy home has the perfect flooring. The right floor for your home adds comfort, beauty and personality. A worn carpet or warped laminate floor can be a trip hazard and make your home look old and uncared for. Flooring fitted by our experienced fitters in Peterborough will look as good when it is installed as it will in years to come.

However, you may be wondering if there is that much to fitting? Surely if you’re a bit handy, you could do it yourself? In this blog post, we look at why you need a fitter in Peterborough to install your flooring professionally and beautifully.

Here at Hereward Carpets, we have a great team of fitters with many, many years of experience. We are very fortunate that we have a team with a wealth of knowledge, and this allows us to offer carpet, vinyl, laminate and LVT flooring fitting, along with carpet tiles and Flotex.

Depending on the type of flooring that requires our professional fitting service determines the various skills and tools needed. While it might look simple, a poorly installed floor can become damaged during installation or in a few years after it has been installed. This is why we recommend our professional and guaranteed fitting service with all the flooring we sell.

Our team know how to cut and fit your flooring perfectly, finishing your renovation project to a premium standard. But that’s not all our team of fitters can do. Some flooring, such as vinyl and LVT flooring, will require your subfloor to be perfectly smooth.

  • If we are laying flooring onto concrete, our fitters will pop over on their first visit to screed the flooring. The self-levelling compound will ensure the subfloor becomes as smooth as glass, and the flooring can then be installed on the second visit.
  • If we are laying flooring onto floorboards, our fitters will board the floor to create a smooth and level fitting surface.

The reason why we need to carry out subfloor preparation is quite simple: soft flooring such as vinyl and LVT will adopt the shape of the subfloor over time. This could mean that a lumpy concrete floor shows through your vinyl, which could cause damage and tearing, or the vinyl settles on the ridges of the floorboards. Our click system LVT also needs to be laid on a glass-smooth subfloor to ensure that the joints are suitably supported.

Some subfloors, both concrete and wooden, may also need to be improved for flooring such as carpet and laminate flooring. Subfloors with holes in them are not ideal for carpet, as the carpet will settle into these and show through in time. Even though laminate flooring is manufactured using a high-density fibre board, it cannot be laid on extremely uneven floor boards, or concrete with great depth discrepancies, as the boards will bounce. The subfloor issues may feel a little overwhelming, or not worth the worry, but flooring fitted on a poor subfloor will not be covered by manufacturer warranties, and will not perform to the best of its ability, meaning a waste of money.

Some vinyl flooring will require fully sticking to the subfloor with specialised vinyl adhesive. This is needed when the flooring is over 12sm in size, and if there is the use of furniture in the room. If you have a dining table and chairs in the kitchen, or laying the flooring in a lounge, for example. The vinyl should be properly adhered to the subfloor to stop the vinyl from bubbling.

Our team of fitters also carry out the preparation of underlay and grippers for carpets and templating of stairs for custom-made runners using traditional wool whipping, or more modern tape edging.

Here are some other frequently asked questions when we discuss our professional fitting service;

  • Can you move furniture for me?

Our paired team can move furniture for you, but there will be additional costs involved. Please discuss this with the sales team in the showroom prior to the fitter’s arrival.

  • Can you uplift and dispose of my existing flooring?

Yes, our fitters can offer this service, but there will be additional costs involved. Please discuss this with the sales team in the showroom prior to the fitter’s arrival, as some floors need not be removed, or may need the use of our scraper to assist in the process.

  • Is all fitting guaranteed?

Yes, here at Hereward Carpets, we pride ourselves on the quality of our work, so all installations come with a 12-month guarantee.

  • Will you trim doors during the fitting of my flooring?

Our fitters do not offer a door trimming service as this is carpentry work. However, we do have contact details of carpenters we would recommend.

  • What are your fitting lead times?

We often get asked about our lead times, and they are generally somewhere between 2 and 4 weeks. However, there are lots of factors to consider, and there are occasions where we may be able to fit quicker than the time quoted above. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements or read our lead time blog.

  • My carpet has a visible line approximately 30cm from the wall. What do I do?

The majority of carpets that are stored, waiting to be fitted, will display a crushed line, approximately. 30-40cm from a wall. This line is simply a pressure line, and not a manufacturing fault.

A pressure line is formed when the carpet is rolled around the cardboard tube for stability. To keep carpets clean, they are rolled pile-in from the point of order, and when the first roll around the pole meets the carpet pile again, it applies pressure to the carpet tufts. This line is very common and is not to be worried about. Regular hoovering and fluffing of the pile will soon relieve this pressure. If the line has not improved in appearance within 2-3 weeks, please contact us, and we will be more than happy to help.
