When it comes to choosing the right carpet for your home, there is a lot to think about. Think about what you need from your flooring. Do you need a carpet that is hard-wearing, as there is a lot of traffic and footfall in the area? Perhaps you want that luxurious carpet feel underfoot in your home? Would you like a budget-friendly carpet that is kind to your wallet? As we said, there is a lot to think about.

In this blog post, we look at how to choose the right carpet fibre for your home. Not all carpets are created equal. In addition, buying a carpet for your home is an investment. This means that you need to make the right choice for you, your home, your family and your budget.

The material that you choose for the carpet in your home will impact the durability and longevity of the carpet. It will also impact the feel of the carpet and the maintenance required to keep it looking its best. You are always welcome to pop into our flooring showroom to have a feel of the carpets for yourself.

There are four main materials for carpets. These are wool, nylon, polyester and polypropylene. Take a look at these primary carpet fibres below.

Wool Carpet

A wool carpet will feel a little coarse to the touch, but the colour banks are phenomenal. The dying process within the manufacturing stage can create some beautiful and bold blues, to striking reds and blissful pinks and purples. Far more creative and colourful spaces are produced with wool carpets. Wool is a naturally durable fibre option but will require professional cleaning to prevent damage to the fibre or colour.

We offer a Guardsman protection spray to prevent spills from becoming stains. This can be applied to your order up to a week prior to fitting. We can also recommend professional cleaning by Safeclean and ServiceMaster Clean.

Wool has many advantages and is also renowned for being environmentally friendly, having fantastic insulation capability and low VOC properties.

Nylon Carpet

Nylon (also known as polyamide) carpets are a popular synthetic option for many homes. They are extremely durable, ultra-resiliant and super soft. Our most popular nylon carpets are made by Associated Weavers and their i-Sense collection is first-class.

Although not as easily cleanable, it showcases some of the softest carpets in the market. Click here to discover the i-Sense collection.

Polyester Carpet

Polyester carpets are known for their softness, great bounce-back quality, and also easy cleanability. More commonly produced as a Saxony pile, they are not ideal for high-traffic areas as pile flattening will become prominent even with great bounce-back properties. Some ranges offer polyester in a shorter and more dense pile, which would be ideal in high-traffic areas. Similar to polypropylene, solution-dyed polyester can be bleach-cleaned with no risk of losing colour.

One of our carpet roll stock ranges is a fantastic example of a Saxony polyester. Handpicked from the Abingdon Floorings Love Story Collection, Soft Whisper is great for bedrooms and cosy snugs. Pop in today to take a look.

Polypropylene Carpet

If you have pets or young children, then polypropylene carpet is ideal for your home. It is an affordable and easily maintained flooring option for busy homes. Polypropylene is bleach-cleanable and often made in a short and dense pile.
