If your stairs and landing are looking worn, tired, and in need of a freshen-up, take a look at some of our flooring ideas.

What carpet should I choose?

Carpet is one of the most popular flooring options for stairs. This is because it offers style, cushioning and warmth in every step. There are also a variety of carpets to choose from that are ideal for your stairs.

Pile

For example, you may want to consider a short and dense twist or a loop pile carpet for your stairs. These pile types are most suitable because they are hard-wearing and durable when the footfall is very concentrated in a particular area; such as the middle of the step.

We would highly advise avoiding a Saxony pile carpet on areas such as the stairs and landing, as over a short period, the pile will flatten, matt and you will not be happy with the carpet’s appearance. Pile flattening isn’t the carpet “wearing out”.

Pile Content

Wool or polypropylene would be the next question to tackle. Wool carpets offer a short, dense, and natural fibre pile, and therefore, wear far better than polypropylene. Wool carpets will also provide better insulation in the home. Wool fibres are dyed in the manufacturing process, and with a rainbow of colours, you will find it difficult to choose. However, as wool has a dye process, it is not easily cleaned like polypropylene. The colour dye will also be bleached if you have large windows with the UV of the sunlight sitting on the pile.

Polypropylene carpets offer a softer underfoot feeling, along with easy cleanability. You can even use diluted bleach! This means that this pile content will suit a family home as it will stand up to a busy lifestyle of children, pets, mud and anything else you can throw its way.

Pets

If you have pets, we would not recommend loop pile carpets. Pets claws can get stuck in the loops and will cause damage to the carpet which cannot be rectified by our fitters.

Another way you may wish to spruce up your tired stairs and landing is to add a pattern or some colour. Adding a small floral or hexagon design, for example, will add a touch of something different. Adding colour with subtle stripes adds interest in what can be a boring place to get from A to B. Patterned carpets can look sensational, however, more carpet is needed to allow for pattern matching, therefore costing a touch more than a traditional look.

We then finish with our blog with, of course, the finishing touches; carpet whipping, tape binding and stair rods. Going the extra mile can add the wow factor to your home.

Finishing the stairs with a runner, will, of course, bring a little more stair preparation, and daily maintenance, but boy can it be worth it. Here at Hereward Carpets, we offer carpet whipping (or edging) as well as tape binding. You may wish to add stair rods to complete the look, but they don’t have to be used. It really is a personal choice.
