Bathrooms are one of the most personal rooms in the house, but you might ask what is the right flooring for my bathroom? The room where we start the day, and usually the last room we go in before bed each night too. You want your bathroom to be a welcoming and beautiful space to start and end your day. However, it must be a practical space too. This is where you need to consider the right flooring for your bathroom. Your bathroom flooring needs to be practical, durable and most importantly, safe.
With hot and steamy showers, bare feet, wet floors, damp towels, splashes of water and more – safety in your bathroom is important. You need a floor that can stand up to the moisture-prone environment of the bathroom. It needs to be water-resistant and non-slip. The flooring also needs to be easy to maintain. For all the reasons we have just addressed, Hereward Carpets would only recommend sheet vinyl and LVT flooring.

Sheet vinyl flooring
Pros of sheet vinyl flooring | Cons of sheet vinyl flooring |
There is a wider range of patterns available in sheet vinyl, with domestic-rated non-slip surfaces. Easy to maintain with a mild floor cleaner, and warm underfoot. | Sheet vinyl can only be purchased in 2, 3 and 4-metre widths. Therefore, depending on the pattern and design you choose, you may have to purchase extra waste for the pattern to run in a particular direction. Sheet vinyl can also be easily damaged if you drop sharp items such as nail scissors onto the flooring. Vinyl flooring is only water-resistant. |
LVT flooring
Pros of LVT flooring | Cons of LVT flooring |
LVT is soft and slip-resistant underfoot, which is important in a room where you will often have bare feet. With an outstanding wear layer, this flooring is ready for the busiest of families. | Although being 100% waterproof is ideal in your bathroom, LVT is best fitted under the bathroom suite. This means that you will have to remove the toilet, sink pedestal and bath panel prior to the fitter’s arrival in order for a more watertight and cleaner finish. |
Subfloor preparation
In order to lay either sheet vinyl or LVT flooring, your subfloor must be completely smooth. Any imperfections will appear in your new flooring choice.
- If your bathroom is on a ground floor and has a concrete subfloor, our fitters will need to lay a self-levelling compound (screed) the day before the fitting of the flooring.
- If your bathroom is on the first floor and has a wooden subfloor, we will need to board the floor before laying the flooring.
Many issues arise in both vinyl and LVT flooring when the subfloor has not been sufficiently prepared. Our estimating team will assess your subfloor during the measuring appointment, we will include any additional preparation costs in your quotation, and our fitting team will take care of the rest.
