We’re often asked what a carpet manufacturer’s warranty actually includes — and just as importantly, what it doesn’t. At Hereward Carpets, we want you to enjoy your flooring for years to come, so it’s worth understanding the details before you buy.
What’s Not Covered: Pile Flattening and Appearance Loss

One of the most common issues customers notice is pile flattening — when the carpet fibres lose their upright look in busy areas. While it can be disappointing, pile flattening and appearance loss are not covered by any manufacturer’s warranty.
This is because appearance changes are a natural part of carpet use, not a manufacturing fault. The carpet doesn’t leave the factory looking flat — it happens once it’s fitted and walked on. You’ll often see this first in doorways and high-traffic areas, where dirt and daily footfall compress the pile.
Why Pile Flattening Happens
Flattening is especially common in twist pile carpets, and it’s not a sign that your carpet is wearing out. It’s simply the result of pressure, movement, and maintenance habits. Take a look at our in-depth blog about pile flattening.
Wear Warranties vs Appearance
We understand it can feel frustrating when a carpet comes with a 10- or 20-year wear warranty, but appearance issues like flattening aren’t covered. That’s because “wear” in warranty terms refers to fibre loss, not looks.
If you’d like to see examples, take a look at Associated Weavers and Abingdon Flooring warranty details — they explain this distinction clearly.
Choosing the Right Carpet for Your Home
At Hereward Carpets, we often advise against very soft, thick saxony pile carpets if appearance retention is important to you. These deep, luxurious carpets feel wonderful underfoot but typically show flattening more quickly.
How long your carpet keeps its appearance depends on:
- How many people live in your home
- How often you vacuum (or “hoover”)
- The type of vacuum you use
For soft saxony carpets, we recommend a vacuum with a beater bar (such as some Dyson models). The beater bar helps lift and revive the pile — but you’ll need to vacuum daily to keep that plush look(Who has time for this?). Think of it like raking sand: the moment the tide comes in, the surface flattens again.

Our Honest Advice
We completely understand the desire to sink your toes into a soft, deep pile carpet after a long day. But if you want a carpet that stays looking fresh for years, it’s worth choosing a denser, more resilient style instead.
A practical, hard-wearing carpet will often look newer for longer — and that, in our experience, beats short-lived luxury every time.
